James' automatic selection in the squad followed his remarkable success at the 2017 London World Athletics Championships setting a new 200m record at 24.09sec. This followed his success at Rio 2016 where he set a new record in the T36 800m of 2min 02.39sec In the last bulletin we reported James contested the T36 400m event at the Oceania Athletics Championships. James set a new world record in the 400m at 53.24sec. He is now the proud owner of three world records and will go to Dubai to defend his title in the 400m.
The Tokyo Olympics won't hold an 800m event in the T36 class, so James is now concentrating on maintaining his crown in the shorter 200m and 400m events.
The start of the Little Athletics season is fast approaching. Junior athletes competing in the age groupings above 12 years of age are classified as dual registered athletes. This means not only will the athlete be a registered Little Athlete but they will be linked to an Athletics New South Wales (ANSW) club. Parents of these athletes have a choice as to which ANSW club they are linked to.
The ANSW system allows an athlete to compete in events like the Treloar Shield, as well as a diverse number of competitions held at various venues, mostly in Sydney. For a keen athlete there is no shortage of competitions in which they can enter. Some are geared to the serious athlete, other competitions are geared to the more social competitor.
Our ANSW club, Athletics Wollongong, is centred at the Kerryn McCann track, Beaton Park, and has a very strong history in providing competition and coaching for keen young athletes. Our contact details are as follows.
Athletics Wollongong - Michael McClelland 0422913 428. Wednesdays 5.30pm. Wednesdays were chosen as the time doesn't conflict with any of the Little Athletics venue times. Comp will start October. We have a Facebook page ... Athletics Wollongong. Our website is www.athleticswollongong.org.au.
Little Athletics registrations will commence online from August 1 on the Little Athletics NSW website http://www.lansw.com.au.
