The history of the club's establishment of and commitment to the Park was outlined to those present.
Lord Mayor Gordon Bradbery attended and thanked the club members for their long history of active commitment to the community and the city through their various projects.
Hosted by the council staff, a healthy and enjoyable breakfast was followed by a tour of the facility, from which the best views of Port Kembla to the south and the Wollongong Lighthouse to the north are visible.
The club has a long and proud history with Greenhouse Park, having directing funds bequeathed to the club by Past President Babbidge, to contribute to the establishment of the Park to celebrate the club's 75th birthday.
Former Lord Mayor Alex Darling was handed the keys to the gates, conducting the official opening in 2003.
Following the official opening, members of the club continued with a special planting of trees along Babbidge Drive leading from the entry gates to the gardens where council staff under the leadership of Mike McKeon have continued greening and beautifying this best kept secret in this city.
Every July on National Tree Day, members of the public join council staff and Rotarians to continue rejuvenating the area by planting native trees and grasses and shrubs, with over 250,000 planted over 16 years.
The focus is to enhance development from a tip to a place for wildlife, native fauna and native grasses.
This is also in harmony with the plans for the city to maintain a green corridor of trees down the escarpment from Mt Keira to Greenhouse Park.
The focus is to enhance development from a tip to a place for wildlife, native fauna and native grasses.
