The NSW Department of Planning and Environment received a modification application for the sand quarry at Crooked River Road from the proponent, dated May 25.
The property on which the quarry is located sits on the border between the Kiama and Shoalhaven Local Government Areas and cuts across a portion of the site.
The southern part of the site is located in Shoalhaven City.
The extended dredge area, however, is located solely within the Kiama Municipality.
Cleary Bros currently extracts and processes sand for inclusion in its concrete products, which are produced at its plants located at Bomaderry, Bombo, Albion Park Rail and Coniston.
The site, which has an extensive history of operation as a sand quarry, has been in operation for more than 50 years, during which time various approvals have been sought to modify the quarry.
Cleary Bros has a permit to export 80,000 tonnes each year of sand and related products.
According to the main report on the NSW Department of Planning and Environment’s website, Cleary Bros propose “to extend the area of works at the sand quarry northwards within a cleared area of the site currently used for grazing”.
“The extension would only result in limited vegetation removal, with the current infrastructure and throughput remaining the same”.
The period of public exhibition finishes on July 4.
The proposed changes are on public exhibition on the department’s website.
Copies of the relevant documents are also available from Kiama Council’s administration building at 11 Manning St, Kiama.
Those wishing to prepare and submit comments or recommendations regarding the application should consult the department’s website.
