The Summit Park access road and the park itself were built by Rotarians with the foresight and resources to do so over 60 years ago.
The Staff of the Garden join with members of the Rotary Club of Wollongong to share opportunities throughout the year to organise and invite the community to visit the amazing facilities and beauty of this city’s iconic treasures and top tourist destinations.
This year, the club has shared working bees in Summit Park; an Easter family fun day and now the Botanic Garden open day will be held on Sunday, May 27. Garden staff will share their skills and special features of the garden to help celebrate the Botanic Garden of Australia and New Zealand annual open day.
At this event Rotary will be providing its scrumptious bacon and egg rolls; sausage sizzle and Devonshire teas (scone, jam, cream with a cup of tea).
All funds raised on the day will be donated to Rotary supported community projects and youth programs.
The Botanic Garden Day will run from 10am to 2pm and includes:
- Botanic Garden information tent at Murphy’s Ave entrance;
- At 10am and 12pm meet our local Botanic Garden Day ambassador, John Gabriele, fondly known as “the barefoot gardener” and presenter of ABC Illawarra’s Compost Heap radio show (on every Saturday morning);
- Hands-on fun at the Discovery Centre with kitchen garden smoothies, seed bomb making, learn how to keep backyard chickens and make a recycled bird feeder;
- Botanic Garden staff will provide interactive talks and tours including the Bush Tucker garden; A Habitat Garden (covering the open forest and grassland and the rainforest); the Palm Garden; behind the scenes nursery tour and you can talk to staff about local seed production and collection;
- General garden buggy tours will be conducted by The Friends of Wollongong Botanic Garden;
- Visit the Towri Centre where the Greenplan Nursery and The Friends of Wollongong Botanic Garden will have a limited selection of plants for sale, as well as botanical art cards.
