This was Gregson's first indoor track experience and the Australian 1500-metre champion ran a brilliant race to finish third in his heat in a time of 3min 44.44sec.
He missed out on the final as only the first two in the heat could qualify.
Unfortunately his timing could not match the others who were faster than him in the previous heat.
Gregson came into this race with a season's best of 3:38.0 and having just won his third national Australian title at the Gold Coast last month.
Realising he had to finish in the top two places to make the final, he surged into the lead with two laps to go but just could not keep the pace of Kenyan Vincent Kibet and Ethiopia's Samuel Tefera at the finish line.
