The dog was attacked during a walk with its elderly owner where it slipped off its lead, and was spooked into the river.
The dog spent at least an hour fighting heavy currents before it was saved by a Marine Rescue boat.
Its owner had been walking the dog in a park near the Nowra pool, on the southern bank of the river, when the attack took place.
Holiday makers spotted the dog in distress while they were stopped on Nowra Bridge, and drove to the water’s edge to try and help it.
They watched Marine Rescue bring the dog to shore, and then take the dog to a vet in Bomaderry.
Fortunately the dog was micro-chipped. The owner was easily identified, and quickly reunited with his pet.
The holiday makers have been lauded as “legends” on social media, and marine rescue boat operators were acknowledged for their apt work.
