It’s been a long-time tradition at Smiths Hill High School but the Saturday School of Community Languages is available to all Illawarra high school students.
The classes are for high school students who have a background in the languages on offer – Arabic, Chinese, Macedonian, Greek, Serbian and – when the demand exists – Hindi, Italian, Korean and Turkish.
The Illawarra’s only selective high school offers a number of languages for students to study at its Saturday School of Community Languages.
These languages are not available for study through the students’ day schools.
“All Year 7 to 12 Students, from government and non-government schools are eligible to attend and at no cost,’” program assistant supervisor Khaled Elhage said.
He added the centre had in recent years increasingly taken on second and third generation Australians, and recently arrived refugees.
