Authorities closed the road in both directions between Silverwater Road and Hill Road after the powerlines fell at around 3pm. Early reports suggest that they were knocked over by a turning truck.
Two westbound have reopened, but eastbound commuters are diverting into Silverwater Road and St Hilliers Road.
Traffic is very heavy in the area. The Transport Management Centre said that there is no forecast as to when Parramatta Road will reopen, since the power pole is being replaced.
Route M92 buses have been delayed up to 15 minutes and are using Boorea Street and St Hilliers Road instead of John Street and Parramatta Road to get around the powerlines.
Buses are missing four stops on Parramatta Road and four stops on John Street.
Ausgrid is at the site with emergency services working to replace the pole and restring the wires.

Traffic was queued back five kilometres to Southern Cross Drive at one stage.
Emergency services and traffic crews worked to free a trapped occupant.
