Growing up with cerebral palsy, Colwell had major orthopedic surgery in October last year to lengthen and strengthen her right leg, spending several months in a wheelchair as she recovered.
Frustrated by the fact that she couldn't do her favourite activity, which is to run, her strength has slowly built up, with considerable help from family, her athletics coach Danielle and excellent medical attention.
Her passion for running is infectious and has created a number of opportunities for her, including her most recent eligibility to attend the Australian Little Athletics under 15 training camp at the AIS in Canberra later this year.
When did you start athletics?
"I started Little Athletics with Albion Park Little A's in 2016 as an under 10 athlete I registered with Athletics Wollongong in 2018 as my Senior club so that I could compete in Athletics NSW events."
What do you love about athletics?
"I enjoy athletics because it allows me to challenge myself and as a para-athlete many sports do not offer a separate para-athlete program. Athletics Australia has an excellent program for para-athletes and offers a variety of events. The 800m is probably my favourite, as it takes a bit of strategy to win."
What have been your successes?
"I attended the national schools athletics and cross country competitions in 2017, 18 and 19. I competed in a range of events across the track and field program including 800m, Long Jump, shot put, discus and relays.
My best ever individual result was winning the 2018 National Cross Country title at Maleny in Qld. The course was extremely challenging with steep hills and descents. As a team, we won gold for the 4x1km primary school girls relay and u11 girls team event.
The highlight of last year was being selected for the Australian Little Athletics Under 15 years camp at the AIS in Canberra. Over the last year I haven't been able to compete, so my selection for the LAA National Camp was based on my results over the previous few years instead. I am very grateful to be given this opportunity."
Who is your coach and how often do you train?
"I train 2-3 days/week with my coach Danielle Szakacs and the Danszak Speed Squad at Albion Park. Once my rehab is complete, I am hoping to increase my training. "
What are your goals?
"My goals at the moment are to return to full fitness and get back into competitions. I am aiming to compete at the NSW All Schools in September. Eventually, I would like to attend an International competition and represent Australia. "
Who do you look up to for inspiration?
"My squad mate Tayissa Buchanan inspires me to work hard and strive for my goals. Tayissa is passionate and committed to her training, no matter what obstacles she faces. Tay never backs down. I hope to follow in Tayissa's footsteps one day as she is a National 800m champion."
