Helping the environment: Reusable refill containers are the latest coffee craze coming to Wollongong as the industry becomes more environmentally friendly.

Wollongong coffee lovers are opting for a better footprint for their coffee fix via a new initiative from a local coffee roaster.

Early in 2020 Delano Specialty Coffee launched coffee container refills as a kinder way to the environment for people to enjoy coffee at home.

The Montague Street business already has close to 150 customers choosing the reusable option. Delano is selling 40kg of coffee each week into reusable containers and preventing more than 2000 coffee bags from ending up in landfill.

Head of coffee Boris Georgiou said the initiative is part of a drive to decrease the amount of single-use packages leaving Delano, without compromising the quality of its coffee.

"If stored in a proper storage container, your coffee will remain fresh and full of flavour for longer. The Airscape coffee storage containers actively removes and locks out air to preserve and protect the freshness and flavour of the coffee," he said.

"They are BPA free, hand washable and the stainless-steel body resists staining and UV rays.

"We have been looking for a good solution for some time and these containers do the job of premium valved coffee bags, if not better."

As an encouragement for coffee drinkers to help the environment the first refill is free for each container sold.

"This Coffee Container Refills project was introduced at Delano as a way for our customers to have a more environmentally friendly coee experience," Mr Georgiou said.

"At Delano Specialty Coffee, we strive to run a low waste kitchen and were one of the first in the region to trial an organic kitchen composting solution run by Biocup, a pioneer in compostable coffee cups."

Delano Coffee is also ocean friendly certified by the Surfrider Foundation Australia which is dedicated to protecting our oceans.

Delano's take away cups are also biodegradable, the business composts all scraps, uses only re-usable containers, no glad wrap, no straws and only paper/cardboard takeaway containers.

How the refilling works;

  1. Choose your blend: Maverick, Cargo and Organic.
  2. Purchase a 500g coffee container in the cafe for $49.
  3. Receive first refill for free.
  4. Then $15 per refill after that.
