Among the highlights was the Illawarra Track Challenge held on Saturday, January 12.
The ITC is a well run event by Illawarra Blue Stars and Athletics NSW and attracts a lot of Sydney interest and the interest of generous sponsors. Competition is very tight against the best city athletes.
Congratulations to local resident, but Illawong trained Abbie Taddeo who won the sprint double, 60m 7.43sec and 100m 11.69sec.
Results for Athletics Wollongong club athletes included:
Women's Open 60m Chelsey-Rose Jackson 8.32sec.
Women's 40-49 60m Rebekah Powers 1st 8.44sec.
Women's Open 100m Chelsey-Rose Jackson 13.38sec, Rebekah Power 13.47sec.
Men's Open 60m Gabriel Bickel 7.24sec, Lucas Campbell 7.98sec, Rown Karanja 7.58sec.
Men's open 100m Gabriel Bickel 11.30sec, Ben Dennis 11.3sec, Tyson Lewis 11.51sec, Rowan Karanja 12.14sec and Lucas Campbell 12.85sec.
Patrick Mitchell did well taking out the men's 20+ para 100m in 14.40sec and the 400m in 67.10sec.
Women's Open 400m Susie Seitaridis 59.21sec and Tayissa Buchanan 59.88sec.
Men's Open 400m Ben Dennis 52.43sec, Michael Doodson 59.73sec and Lucas Campbell 59.80sec.
Women's Shot Div 2 Rosemary Boyland 3rd with 8.54m.
In Men's Division long jump, 14-year-old Lucas Campbell was the youngest in the group and did well with 4.89m.
Congratulations to The Lake Illawarra Little Athletics Group for coping with a smoke-affected meeting on Sunday, January 12.
Most of the events were completed, which is a credit to their organisation.
On the same weekend, two of our promising multi-event athletes Thomas Noakes and Lara Check, went to the ACT to compete in the ACT Combined Championships.
The Saturday events went without a hitch, but the Sunday events were called off due to heavy smoke.
Amazingly Lara amassed a points total high enough to qualify for the U18 Heptathlon Nationals - despite the final two events being cancelled!
She also qualified for the Australian championships in a number of individual events and was well on the way to a new personal best.
Similarly rueing the smoky cancellation was Thomas who was just over 100pts behind the leader in the U18 Decathlon after Day 1.
Fingers crossed for better conditions at SOPAC in two weeks' time!
This last weekend saw the running on the NSW Country Championships at the top class Dubbo track.
