Whilst our masters of IBS battled it out at the Oceania Masters Championships, in hot, sunny conditions in Mackay Queensland, our student athletes took on the best athletes for their age in the recent Combined High Schools carnival.

Held in blustery windy conditions at Homebush, the student athletes have commenced the summer season with a bang, and are now setting themselves up for a fabulous summer of track and field.
The combined high schools is a great indication of form, as many will then head to the NSW All Schools later in September when they take on student athletes from all Secondary Schools-private, government and independent schools, bringing together the best junior athletes in the state.
Our IBS members have been superb, and although we do not have all results due to our membership opening up this Sunday, we can report that the Adams girls, Grace and Ashlyn had a super week with Ashlyn winning her 90metres hurdles in a PB, and Grace second in her hurdles.
Javelin Thrower Charlotte Smith continued her improvement and took out a great third placing in the javelin, whilst Jonti Faulkner ran the race of his life to take out the silver medal in the 17yrs 400m.
Faulkner rang a personal best time of 50.1, with sub 50secs well within this talented young athlete.
A dropped baton cost the talented Dapto High relay team, and after finishing second last year, were looking forward to the gold this year.
Emma Matthews has to be one of the unluckiest athletes by narrowing missing a medal when she finished a close fourth in both her 100 and 200 metres, in one of the most talented groups of the carnival.
We do know there are more fabulous results coming from athletes who intend to join blue stars this season and we take this opportunity of congratulating you all and look forward to you taking part for IBS for summer season 2019/2020.
Our masters athletes are among the proudest and most respected athletes of the club, and what a week they had in McKay in the Oceania Masters Championship.
Thrower Mary Thomas dominated her age bracket winning her hammer in NSW record, shot with an Oceania and State record, discus in state and Oceania record, and javelin in NSW record and a Penthalon in NSW and Oceania record.
She also picked up 2nd in the weight throw, also a NSW record. What a great result but club mate June Lowe was not going to be outdone with a massive 11 events and taking medals in all.
Her performance has to be rated one of the best with 1st in weight throw in NSW record, first hammer NSW record, first in shot NSW record, first in discus, 1st high jump with state record and throws penthalon also a NSW record.
June then took out 2nd in her hurdles, 3rd in 60metres in state record, third in 100 metres with a state record, third in long jump and second in javelin, to give her one of the best championships of any athlete and wiping most of the womens 65yrs records off the books.
Andrew Rodda surprised himself with three bronze in 60, 100 and 200 metres, and then teamed up in 4x100m relay to take out second and second also in the medley relay where he ran the 200m leg for the Australian team.
Club mate, Colin Clarson competed well and came home with third in 800m, second in the 400m and then ran the 800m leg in the medley relay to bring home the silver medal.
Rina Flynn was not coming home without a medal and competed well to take out third in the 400m, and second in the 800m, then ran in the Australian Medley relay to take out the gold medal.
Illawarra Blue Stars will open the summer track and field season on Sunday.
Athletes, both new and old are asked to be at the Kerryn McCann Athletic Centre by 2pm for first events to commence at 2,30pm.
Each round, events will be conducted from Under 8s through to masters men and women, with encouragement to families to come along and take part, whether it be as an athlete or helping out on events with our qualified officials advising and assisting any new members who wish to give a helping hand.
