Last week saw the NSW PSSA hold a state team selection trial for the School Sports Australia carnival to be held in Darwin on September 18-23. This selection process doesn't follow the normal progression protocols for athletes as Darwin's heat and perhaps excessive wetness would make the holding of the carnival in its usual time slot of early December quite a risky process.

Against the best in NSW our junior members certainly held their own, and with a compressed program including finals, the long day was quite exhausting for some.
Results known so far are:
Amy Campbell G12 shot 11th 8.52m.
Charlize Colwell G12 multiclass, 100m 4th 17.66sec, 200m 4th 37.09, 800m 3rd 3.31.98sec, long jump 3rd 2.50m, shot put 3rd 4.60m and discus 2nd 12.79m.
Chelsy Wayne G12 second discus, with a personal best of 34.46m missing first place by a close 6cm, long jump 3.94m.
Genevieve Tozer high jump 1.25m.
Savannah Dzajkoski G12 high jump 7th 1.35m.
William Willis B12 discus 3rd 37.03m.
Well done to all competitors, and in particular Chelsy, Charlize and William for the selection to the NSW team.
To other results, and one of the feel good stories to come out of last week's Wollongong Diocesan Athletics Carnival held at Campbelltown Stadium deals with two 13-year-old girl competitors, Delta Amidzovski and Tayissa Buchanan. These two ladies have been strong competitors way back since primary school, quite often racing with each other, but were united together in the all powerful NSW athletics squad that convincingly won the Australian Little Athletics Championships in Hobart last year. Tayissa is a strong middle distance runner coming first in the Diocesan G13 400m in a time of 62.84 sec and first in the G13 800m 2.28.89.
Delta had a blinder in the above carnival. She won five gold medals and broke five records and naturally as a result was the age champion for 13 years girls. The new standing records are now 100m 12.56sec, 200m 25.86sec, high jump 1.65m, long jump 5.64m and triple jump 10.84m. I am quite sure that these two mates will be very supportive of each other when they contest the NSWCCC carnival in late September at SOPAC
Also at Campbelltown we had Jayda Amidzovski in the G15 category who was first in the long jump 4.57m, third in the 200m 29.30sec, 4th in the 100m 13.81sec and 4th in the high jump 1.25m. Her efforts were good enough to score her an equal second in the G15 point score. Both Delta and Jayda are students at the Corpus Christi High School at Oak Flats.
Zac Heywood in the boys 16 category threw a 4m personal best in the discus scoring a second place with a throw of 29.90m.
Miki Markovski competed in the Catholic Primary Schools regional carnival recently. Miki is a multi-talented athlete, competing in athletics, soccer and beach sports. Her results were 1st shot put 7.39m and second discus 17.54m. She also competed in the 800m, 100m, 200m, long jump and the relay. Her efforts won her an equal second placing in the age point score. Well done to all the above athletes
Sunny Mackay is the venue for the Oceania Masters Championships being held from August 31 to September 7. One of AW's most outstanding masters athletes, Anthony Howlett, will be contesting this event, alongside competitors from 14 Pacific nations. We wish Anthony all the best and hope for some great results at the carnival.
Young Karlee Symonds, who is a young visually impaired athlete, is a very enthusiastic young competitor in all the carnivals in which she competes. Bypassing her usual track programs, Karlee at the CHS Regional carnival scored personal bests in long jump 3.07m, shot 3.79m and discus 5,65m. Well done Karlee.
