The nine local Rotary Clubs, Corrimal, Dapto, Fairy Meadow, Illawarra Sunrise, Kiama, Shellharbour City, West Wollongong, Wollongong and Wollongong South, at the District changeover on Sunday last, received an Award for Public Relations and Marketing, a perpetual trophy, which has to be awarded to a club. It was presented to President Dot Hennessy OAM, who will be passing it around the nine clubs in the 2019-2020 Rotary Year.

It is a real honour to have received this recognition given that there are 62 clubs in the District and the criteria is quite rigorous and competitive.
All of the local clubs work together to share their projects and highlight the various activities they undertake in each of our communities.
Through these columns, the spirit and generosity of their time, the Rotarians in each of these clubs demonstrate their "Service Above Self", Rotary's motto, to highlight the purpose and beneficiaries of these activities and projects.
Each year, throughout the Rotary World, a changeover as it is known, means that the current office bearers and board step down and the new board is introduced. Funds raised during the Rotary year determine the donations to organisations and projects, those that are completed and those that are ongoing.
Every club in the Rotary world aspires to achieve the Rotary Citation which is a set of criteria/goals: Support and Strengthen Clubs; Focus and Increase Humanitarian Service; Enhance public image and awareness. This includes each club reporting to Rotary International (RI) achievements in three of these areas: setting the club's goals for the year; reporting details including funds raised, the total number of volunteer hours for each project. It was announced that five of the nine clubs will receive this very prestigious award.
The Rotary Club of Wollongong, for example, financially and through volunteering hours, has provided ongoing support to PCYC Wollongong, The Salvation Army, the local Interact Club at Keira High School to add to funds raised by them through their activities; The Disability Trust; Cancer Council; and the Illawarra Clubs Imagination Library. The total gifts and donations are $20,790. Each of the clubs operates in a similar manner. The fund-raising projects and disbursements vary according to the same principles, their areas of focus and local priorities.
On behalf of all the clubs, we thank the editor and staff of the Advertiser for their ongoing support over the last three years. The support we receive in the Illawarra is outstanding and a true example of their commitment to supporting community organisations and projects.
