The volunteer operated society needs to raise $40,000 to complete the restoration of this locomotive and place it on the tracks of its Albion Park museum.
ILRMS treasurer Brad Johns said supporters and sponsors of the rebuild will be provided with constant project progress reports.
"Australian businessman Dick Smith, who is also a railway and aircraft enthusiast, has shown his support and interest on Perry's rebuild," Mr Johns said.
"We welcome all donations and support to bring this fine locomotive back to life.
"All donations over $2 are tax deductible and all funds received on Perry's rebuild will be placed into an account that is specific to this project."
Perry was built in 1949 by Perry Engineering Co in Mile End South Australia and worked for Tully Sugar in North Queensland until it was withdrawn from service in 1965.
A ship called The Brisbane Trader transported Perry to Port Kembla and then it was stored at Kembla Grange for a period of time before it made its way to the Albion Park Rail museum.
The locomotive moved under its own power and was restored by ILRMS volunteers in 1987.
Perry had been a part of Australia's sugar cane industry for many years and was restored and in operation at ILRM's premises for many years.
But sadly Perry recently had to be taken out of service due to much needed boiler repairs required to bring it back to working order.
