The Domain Group recently released the Domain Rental Report for the March 2019 quarter, revealing the median rental price for houses and units across Australia.
The report says the median weekly asking rent for a house in the Kiama local government area is $540.
As of March 2018 this figure was $550, and in March 2014 it was $450.
The report also shows that Kiama has a median unit rental cost of $480.
The weekly rental cost for units increased by 6.7 per cent (from $450 to $480) during the past year.
In the Shellharbour LGA, the median weekly rent for a house as of March 2019 was $485. As of a year earlier this figure was $480, and in March 2014 it was $400.
Shellharbour units have a median rent of $380; this is the same as 12 months prior.
In the Wollongong LGA, the median weekly rent for a house as of March 2019 was $500; the same amount as 12 months prior.
In March 2014, the figure was $420.
The report shows that houses in the Shoalhaven jumped by a significant 13.3 per cent during the year - from $415 to $470.
Meanwhile, the report also indicated that Sydney defied the national trend of rising rents and became the only capital city to record annual falls for houses and units.
House rents are now back to late-2016 prices, and unit prices back to early-2017.
"Current rental conditions provide tenants with a window of opportunity to negotiate rents and terms," the report said.
"Landlords will face greater competition to secure a tenant resulting in rent reductions to attract and retain tenants."
