To qualify to attend these championships and compete is quite an honour, especially in the light of there being around 478,000 primary students in public schools alone.

Last year, we saw the emergence at the state championships of a class athlete, Chelsea Ezeoke, who won the prestigious Queen Elizabeth Trophy for the Most Outstanding Athlete of the Championships.
This year saw another classy athlete emerge on the state scene who literally made the championships her own.
Delta Amidzovski, 12, from Albion Park Primary, created a huge impression by winning the 100m, clocking a very quick 12.70 sec.
She followed this with a 26.02sec win in the 200m.
Delta broke a 23-year-old record in the long jump, setting the new record 34cm further at 5.49 metres and set a new high jump record at 1.64 metres.
There were quite a number of coaches from the Sydney scene who couldn't help but pass admiring comments on Delta's performances and her friendly easy going nature.
Our club very much appreciates the huge effort put in by all junior members who achieved eligibility to compete at these championships.
The Australian Primary Schools Championships will be held at Lakeside Stadium, Albert Park, Victoria, from November 23-27.
We wish Delta all the best in her quest for high achievement at these championships.
Last weekend the Pan Pacific Games were held on the Gold Coast for masters athletes.
Our own Montse Ros, who is a specialist pole vaulter, went up to compete against the best in the Pacific Region in that event.
The good news is that Montse came first in her age class with a 2.90m jump which also happened to be the highest jump out of all the female competitors. Congratulations Montse.
Even though our season is now in full swing, we have had some difficulty with woeful conditions on our Wednesday nights.
To add some inspiration, club supporter Dennis Bindon from Bump Products in Wollongong has again kindly agreed to sponsor the AW Gift on November 21.
The Gift is a handicapped event for sprinters held over a number of rounds to determine the eventual winner. For further information on Bump Products go to www.bumpproducts.com.au.
On November 28 there will be a number of novelty event being run to celebrate the 60th anniversary year of our club. I am sure it is going to be quite an amusing night.
Our club wishes to extend a speedy recovery to IBS member Mary Thomas who has undergone an operation recently. Mary is quite a competitor. I am sure she will be back demonstrating her throwing prowess.
For further information go to www.athleticswollongong.org.au. We would love to see more members rocking up. Competition starts at 5.30pm on Wednesday evenings. There are usually four events rostered for each of the age groups throughout the night.
