The first for this year occurred on Wednesday, October 24. A very energetic and focused group gathered to carry out the tasks organised by the Curator and their staff member Graham Cook.
Graham has been guiding and leading Rotarians in recent years, on this occasion weeding, raking, sweeping and preparing beds for planting. Once ready, areas were allocated for planting, which was then followed by spreading mulch.
The Rotarians were joined by families, representatives from the mountain bike group and members of the community. It was a very chilly evening and all were keen to complete the tasks as efficiently and quickly as possible.
Tasks completed, Frances “Frankie” Kirkham was inducted into the Rotary Club of Wollongong. Frankie has been very active in Rotary Youth Programs for almost six years. She is only 19 years of age and has been honoured with the prestigious Paul Harris Fellow award for her services to youth projects in her local area of Batemans Bay.
She has also been selected to travel to Rotary International Conferences to represent her Rotary District. Frankie moved to Wollongong to study a Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of International Studies at the University of Wollongong.
She is the youngest member of the Rotary Club of Wollongong and one of the youngest to have been honoured with a Paul Harris Fellow recognition.
Whenever possible, the opportunity to induct new members into the Club is conducted at Mt Keira Summit Park.
This is a fitting form of recognition and celebration, given that the Rotary Club of Wollongong, in 1954, initiated the building of the park as a Rotary International Golden Anniversary project to celebrate 50 years of Rotary Service throughout the World.
This is the first year an open invitation is extended to all in the community who are interested in contributing to maintaining Mount Keira Summit Park.
The next “working bee” will be held on November 28, 2018 from 5pm-6 30pm. BYO dinner to follow and enjoy the beauty of this city’s iconic tourist attraction.
