It is not too late to be part of the Aussie Backyard Bird Count, being held this week until October 28.
Shellharbour City Council and BirdLife Australia asks local residents to spend time in their backyards or local outdoor spaces and count the birds they see.
You can use a free app, which helps identify local birds based on size, colour and location.
The aim nationally is to count more than 2 million birds in seven days. Last year in Shellharbour 4427 individual birds were observed and recorded, contributing to the national count of more than 1.9 million birds in 2017.
The four most commonly recorded birds in Shellharbour were the Rainbow Lorikeet, House Sparrow, Silver Gull and Sulphur-crested Cockatoo. Shellharbour City has some fantastic places for bird watching, such as Blackbutt Forest, Killalea State Park and the shores of Lake Illawarra.

Dogs’ Day Out
Get set to treat your canine companion at Council’s annual Dogs’ Day Out this Saturday, October 28 at Albion Park Showground, 10am to 1pm.
Council hosts the annual event to encourage caring, responsible pet ownership.
It’s known that the relationship between people and their pets has positive emotional and physical benefits for owners, with dogs encouraging a healthy lifestyle that includes walking, outdoor activities and connecting with the local area.
This year’s Dogs’ Day Out features free veterinarian health checks, stalls and free micro-chipping for dogs owned by Shellharbour City residents.
There will also be treats and giveaways for all dogs that attend. The first 50 dogs to arrive will receive a free dog cookie.
Enter your pooch in the competitions, with categories including Perfect Puppy, Best Trick, Best Dressed, Happiest Scruff, Petite Pooch and Huge Hound.
A 1km walk will be held and you can go in the draw to win a custom dog kennel. There also will face painting for the kids and a barbecue, with all proceeds going to Best Friends Fur Ever Rescue Illawarra.
