This culminated in a recent “sold out” event in Sydney to meet the finalists, hear their stories and then wait for the judges’ unenviable task of choosing ultimate winners – two of them.
The project is called Rotary Inspirational Women’s Awards. The awards were established to recognise women across all communities in the state who give outstanding service, over and above their normal roles, locally and overseas.
The awards are the initiative of Rotary Clubs and Districts in NSW. Categories provide an inclusive and fair approach, catering for volunteers from the city and rural areas, young women under 30 and professional women over 30 years of age.
Two of the 16 finalists from the mature age group are from Wollongong, both extremely talented and community focused.
Helen Richards is a stoma therapy sister based in Wollongong Private Hospital. Helen provides outstanding service to patients, staff and families.
She sends specialised medical equipment to various countries and has visited Kenya four times to educate Kenyan nurses. Helen is a compassionate teacher to staff and families involved with bowel cancer.
Our other most worthy finalist from the Illawarra is Maralyn Young. She met the challenge of breast cancer in 2013 by founding Breast Aware Australia.
Maralyn and her organisation have facilitated over 170 free public breast cancer aware workshops in schools, corporations and community groups.
Professor Philip Clingan from Wollongong has provided valuable support with education and revolutionary prosthetic teaching aids.
An outstanding number of nominations were received from Canberra, Ungarie, Orange, Bega, Umina, Wagga Wagga and Blayney as well as Sydney.
