On your mark, set, go for the summer season about to start and our secondary school athletes could not have begun in a better manner. Making it through to the Combined High Schools is a big effort in itself and to make it into a final is even better. To bring home a top placing is ranking that athlete as one of the best junior athletes in the state.

Charlotte Smith opened the meet with a magnificent personal best in the girls 13 years javelin with a fabulous throw of 34.57 metres, one of the best throws for a 13-year-old from our club. She is improving all the time in this event and bettered her previous best of 32 metres twice at the meet. She will now head into the NSW All School with confidence, when all secondary athletes meet together in October.
Emma “Flash” Matthews also had a great meet and with her lightning start, held on to take out the girls 15 years 100m with a gutsy effort and a time of 12.71sec. This young sprinter is improving all the time. Her sprinting has now developed into a class act and she too will head to NSW All Schools with a spring in her step.
Talented young sprinter Natasha Hynoski made the state titles from Canberra in both long jump and 100 metres and she didn’t disappoint. Up against some of the quickest in the state, Natasha gave herself every chance and finished in a quick time of 12.89sec to record a personel best. Once again her start was the key to her success and in both semi and final she led the way down the straight. In the final she finished in 7th spot in one of the closest races of the meet.
Jonti Faulkner, the youngest in the open men’s penthalon, gave it everything to finish in 7th spot, a top effort. His 100m and long jump were his best events, but he showed he has talent over a multiple-event discipline and puts him in a fine spot for the All Schools for his chosen sprint events. He later teamed with his Dapto High School team mates to take out a well deserved 2nd placing in the 17yrs 4x100m. Blue Star member Jake Gander was also a member of the successful team.
Eve Wray, in the process of refining her javelin technique, took out 12th spot but knows that her changing technique will ensure she improves as the season progresses. Jake Attwell also performed well in the walk, and once again this talented young man will be a force in summer.
Blue Stars will open the season with registrations this coming Sunday between 2pm and 4pm for info on our club, registrations, uniforms etc.
No events will be held that day due to Relay for Life, but the official rounds will start the following Sunday, September 23, at Kerryn McCann with a time of 2pm for first events to start right on 2.30pm.
The club wants to let athletes know that each week will commence right on 2.30p.m, so that all events can be conducted each round and every athlete has a chance in each of their events.
There will also be some new ideas coming into place for both athletes and officials so watch this pace and also website of www.illawarrabluestars.com.
