The recently held Combined High Schools in Canberra produced some very good results, and now athletes will move onto state. Many IBS club members did very well and their performances will give them a spot in the South Coast team. But we also have to remember that many of the other zones were also conducting their titles, and some great results from IBS members have come out of these also.

I do not want to highlight any athlete in fear we may miss some, and there are quite a few, but the men’s relay team from Dapto stood out for me in Canberra breaking the record, and now moving onto state to take on the might of some of the metro schools. A very well balanced team and smooth baton changing made this team and also the great understanding of each member’s ability.
Looking over the records for this area not only highlights the talent that has come from the area, but also the number of athletes who went on from school level to senior athletics.
It is interesting to note that most long standing records are held and are still held, by athletes who did go on and in many cases represented Australia either at world junior or senior open level.
Names such as Paul Green, Matt Beckenham, Scott Richardson, Lukas Chodat, Ryan Gregson, Rebecca Vormister (hers now broken) Lauren Elms, Louise McPaul, are a few that come to mind that went onto such levels.
But many of the other records are held by athletes who had outstanding junior level talent but failed to move further into senior competition. Some moved to other sports such as Sally Fitzgibbons (surfing), Mineo Bonetig (soccer) and Trey Barlow(football).
So the question has to be asked: why are there such outstanding records that still stand but many of the athletes who hold them at such level, didn’t go on to senior level?
What talent there is among these athletes and what a shame we didn’t see them reach the senior level of athletics.
Blue Stars will conduct the last round of the winter series on Sunday, August 26, with 100m, 400m, hammer, long jump, walk and 2km run on the program. Events will commence at 10.30am and it is hoped that many will use this meet for state high schools, and also athletes going to world masters.
Open to all athletes of all ages, this is the final round before the club moves into the summer season commencing in September.
Athletes can also get their summer season registration forms completed ready to go in September. If you have been to the first three rounds in May, June, July, don’t miss this one, as all athletes who have attended the four rounds will be in with a chance to win a lucky voucher.
