The pair were arrested after police say they returned to the scene of an earlier crime at a house on Northcliffe Drive on Wednesday morning.
Lake Illawarra police crime coordinator Sergeant Ray Beacroft said a man wielding a screwdriver allegedly broke into the home about 8am but was confronted the occupant.
As a result, the man fled the scene.
About two hours later, Sgt Beacroft said a police forensic services officer was dusting the home’s damaged door for fingerprints when two people “returned wearing masks and brandishing a machete”.
“They’ve seen our ... officer. She immediately called for emergency backup and both offenders fled on pushbikes,” he said.
“We happened to have a number of police in the area at the time and they were arrested … and the weapons were recovered.”
The arrests unfolded on the cycle track off Northcliffe Drive after a police dog was able to track the men down.
Both were charged and refused bail to appear in Wollongong Local Court on Thursday.
Police will allege one of the men was responsible for the initial break-in at the home.
