Winter is a telling time for most track athletes, with many using winter track meets and also park runs etc to prepare for summer season. School students have their main events in winter such as zone, regional and state, and they too need to prepare properly, so the winter track meets are the perfect event to take part in and see how your preparation Is going.

Illawarra Blue Stars will conduct the next meet on Sunday, July 22, with ideal events for all ages. There will be 60m, 150m, javelin, walk, triple jump and a 2 x 800m relay. Just come along at 10am for a 10.30 start an you will be most welcomed in a relaxed friendly environment. There is no entry fee, just the entry fee into the Kerryn McCann Athletic Centre.
The club caters for all ages and what a great way to come along with the whole family who can compete all together at the same time. The August meet will see the final round of the Winter Series on Sunday, August 26, with 100m, 400m, hammer, long jump, walk and 2km. If athletes take part in the 4 rounds of competition, they will be eligible for a draw for a great prize on offer to be drawn at the August meet.
Many members are also using park runs for not only preparation but also for competition, an they too are proving very popular in the winter. The club’s president Geoff Hynoski is competing in trail running, whilst others have chosen their winter sports to maintain fitness levels.
Track season is not that far away but many of the club’s athletes will move to Canberra in August to contest the High Schools Regional titles and hopefully gain a spot for the team to then move onto state Combined High Schools. Coming events will include all school carnivals at Regional level, with many athletes then meeting together for the NSW All Schools to be held in October.
Blue Stars are heading for a jammed packed summer and it is good to be able to report that some dates have now been released and you can place in your diaries. The popular Illawarra Track Challenge will again be hosted by the club, to be held Saturday, January 12, 2019 and the NSW Country titles will be held on January 25-27. The track challenge is always popular and it is hoped that a couple more events may be added to this popular day.
Young athletes who intend to compete in the summer season are reminded they can use the voucher the Government has designed for registration up to $100. Our club and our sport are registered for the voucher and it is a great way to have young people move into our sport and encourage them to take part.
Registration dates for summer will be announced in the next column, but any person wishing to take part in summer athletics from any age (under 8 right through to Masters men and women) can call 4262 8498 or 0409 307 325 or visit our website at illawarrabluestars.com and a reply will come back asap.
Wishing all our winter athletes the best of luck in their chosen events and to our school age athletes the best for their next round of school competition.
