But fortunately, apart from a couple of minor bruises and scratches, the 300-plus Billy Cart Derby participants came through unscathed and had a ball.
None more so than the WAVE FM team of Jade and Trav, who took out the inaugural celebrity race.
They did well to hold out the fast-finishing Illawarra Hawks team.
The long-retired basketball greats Matt Campbell and Glenn Saville may have been competing on a foreign court, but the Hawks’ legends left nothing in the tank, and were just pipped in the ‘speed demon showdown’.
A Shellharbour Anglican College spokeswoman said the bi-annual event was primarily about building community and family relationships.
“The kids that entered spent time with their families building and decorating the billy carts and preparing for the day,” she said.
Bunnings Albion Park with the Men’s Shed sponsored and hosted a special billy cart making night for a lucky group of students.
The College’s junior school head Andrew McPhail said the 2018 event was another huge success, with 80 carts racing on the day.
Other popular activities included the drag race, obstacle course and time trial.
“This event brings families and communities together,” Mr McPhail said.
“Many students build their own carts with family members and many families take time off work to cheer for the teams. Some carts are built for speed, others for manoeuvrability and some for comfort. All the carts look amazing and the students have a ball.”
