“It is not about exercise but to discover the sense of oneness with yourself, the world and the nature. By changing our lifestyle and creating consciousness, it can help us deal with climate change.”
These were the words spoken by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi introducing United Nations’ International Yoga Day (IYD). The fourth International Yoga Day is this week on June 21.

The Illawarra community though will celebrate IYD together on Sunday, June 24 at Dapto Ribbonwood Centre.
Illawarra boasts over 200 yoga teachers, a testament to the emphasis they place here on health, wellbeing and community.
Starting at 8am in the morning the community will gather together for a free hour event inclusive of :
Jrumpinjinbah’s Welcome to Country; the official speech delivered by the President of the UN Association of Australia Dr Patricia Jenkins; Dr Reetu Verma with her fascinating story of overcoming adversity through yoga; plus an official speech and participatory yoga video presented by a representative of the Indian Consulate.
There are nine local yoga teachers, representing nine different yoga studios, who will present a rich world of yoga to explore.
Half hour classes include a wide selection of styles: Yoga Nidra, a deep form of relaxation; Yoga for Kids, Singing Bowls; plus wonderful physical practices such as Vinyasa, Hatha and Flow.
Between classes please visit the colourful yoga marketplace stalls and order Pramila Chaturvedi’s delicious Indian food plus listen to the gifted musicians from A Sound Life.
Statistics (2016 Roy Morgan Poll) show only 5 per cent of men and 15 per cent of women in Australia practise yoga but that it is the fastest growing sport.
Whilst ‘sport’ might not quite describe this rich lifestyle practice, it is clear yoga is growing in popularity and with good reason!
Yoga is not purely an activity that can help you touch your toes. It addresses some of the biggest health issues of our time: obesity to sleep problems, arthritis to lack of concentration.
