Starting on Saturday at 10am the event will showcase the transformation of the former timber mill into a creative hub for artisan studios and small businesses ranging from homewares to fashion, photography and art.
Diversity will feature during tours or visitors can wander through and and meet the artists, see open studios, watch live painting, take part in workshops or buy something.
There will be live music from 2pm on Saturday.
Timber Mill Studios transformed six years ago when Joe McGuinness acquired the property after running a similar space in Sydney for 15 years.
“This was a working timber mill from about 1923 to 2012. I bought it when the owner decided to retire,” he said.
“We spent our time making studios and all the different spaces. There are 32 tennants now. Everything from kiln spaces out the back to what I call production studios for things like screen printing and heavy sculpture. There are painting studios upstairs with photography at the front. In the middle we have some design studios for graphic artists and computer based businesses. There are also warehouse spaces for homewares and fashion.”
There is even a music room.
Renee Kamaretsos moved in six months ago and uses her space for her own creations, art classes and exhibitions.
She also invites interior designers in to look at her works.
Mrs Kamaretsos said she loved the new art hub in the Illawarra.
Timber Mill Studios is a real collective but she thinks it will become an exhibition space for many other artists in the community as well.
“We have artists, photographers, sculptures, jewellery makers, web designers even a print maker and yoga classes,” she said.
“55 Parrots showroom is now based at the mill and Jose Jones restaurant are opening their cafe this weekend.”
Timber Mill Studios in Molloy Street is located near Woolworths and the start of the Northern Distributor.
