Classed as King and Queen of the mountain, the event will be conducted over a five-kilometre course, with an added 2km course for juniors and sprint athletes.
It is a popular event over the years, and is a course that is not only challenging from the distance point of view but also the terrain.
With a little bit of rain during the week, the course can be slippery and athletes are asked to wear appropriate shoes. All athletes are asked to meet at the Mt Kembla Lookout to commence the event right on 10am.
On cross country the course at Minnumurra once again was a challenge, being one of the favourites among athletes. The club’s athletes have posted some great results from school cross country with a number of them off to the state, including the club walker of the year Jake Attwell.
Attwell has proven himself to be a capable distance athlete both on the track and also cross country, and does not limit himself to race racing.
The club also held the first round of the winter track and field series for May and good to see quite a few athletes taking advantage of these meets to prepare for the summer season, and school carnival. Next round will be held Sunday, June 4, with a variety of events to be conducted. See the club web site for events.
Rebecca Dos Santos and relay partner Andrew Lau caused an upset by taking out the first 2x1km track race, both athletes putting in good performances over the distance. They defeated a team of Vincent and Morgan, with Andrew Roda and Corey Hogg finishing in third.
Fast finishing Jess Hogg and Geoff Hynoski could not bridge the gap for their teams, but both athletes running very good splits over the 1km distance.
Meanwhile, female sprinter of the year, Grace Adams and sister Ashlyn have had tremendous runs over the hurdles, with Grace already recording a qualifying time for nationals of 2018/2019, and ashlyn only 0.15 off the mark for her event.
Both athletes will head to Canada for a great sports tour that will give them extra competition and experience school track carnivals are also under way and some good results have been flooding in with Natasha Hynoski breaking a long standing record for girls 16 years 100 metres at Figtree High School.
Blue Stars have announced the 2018-19 executive and management committee.
Geoff Hynoski has been elected as president again, a masters athlete and runs long distance in winter and shorter events on the track in Summer.
At the recent AGM, life membership was bestowed on late Janet Munro and John Munro, who also stated how proud he was to be a member, more than 20 years after starting in athletics after a long career in soccer.
