NSW Primary Principals Association president Phil Seymour said the Literacy & Numeracy Learning Progressions, developed with the national curriculum authority, ACARA, build on the success of the Literacy & Numeracy continuums that NSW teachers have been using for several years.
“The Progressions, like the continuums that preceded them, are a valuable tool that support teachers ongoing monitoring and reporting of a student’s learning progress against the syllabus standards,” he said.
Mr Seymour, who is also the Hayes Park Public School principal, said NSWPPA supported the move to Learning Progressions as a means of early identification of student attainment and monitoring of student achievement and their growth in literacy and numeracy.
He added the Gonski review also strongly supported the use of the Learning Progressions and recommended the “development of a new online and on demand student assessment tool based on the Australian Curriculum learning progressions”.
“In NSW all government primary schools have been using the PLAN tool and in this iteration of the Learning Progressions, PLAN2 has been developed as such a tool for the 560 schools currently involved,” Mr Seymour said.
“These initial schools have identified the need for additional time for teachers to get accustomed to the modified PLAN2 software and to develop strategies and procedures for easier usage.
“Proper, rigorous, professional learning will support these early adopters to develop improved systems for gathering and recording evidence and will share with the rest of our schools as we move into using the Progressions with all students.”
