IBS will once again be well represented in both male an female athletes who are expected to be up among the leaders in most of their events. After a very hectic season, the Masters will be looking to take a break when they return, before some head into the winter season.
Officials take part in Games: IBS’ John Munro, Ann Grimm and Jodie Sundstrom are among the NSW officials chosen to represent Australia at the Commonwealth Games. After witnessing the highs of the Games with an outstanding Opening Ceremony and fabulous results coming from the pool and the cycling, athletics once again has a low spot with the withdrawal of Sally Pearson. This highly talented hurdler was to lead our team of youth and experience, but it is now up to the likes of Dani Samuels , Ryan Gregson, Madeline Hills and co to support a team of very young athletes.
Our performances are not meant to meet those of the swimmers with most countries taking part in athletics and many of the world’s best taking to the track at these games. But we may witness some promising performances from our young athletes who will use these games as a stepping stone to future Olympics and World Championships. IBS wishes all our athletes the best and especially our local athletes Ryan Gregson and Madeline Hills, and to our officials, who we know will perform well at such an important and high level event.
Winter with a difference: Winter is just around the corner but already we are talking cross-country and road racing and our winter track and field meets. This year IBS will offer a winter program with a difference giving athletes the opportunity of competing on a Saturday or a Sunday. The club has incorporated the park runs into the program and encourage members to go along to runs at Fairy Meadow, Bulli, and the beautiful Killalea Reserve Shellharbour. The program also includes IBS runs at Minnumurra course, Mt Kembla (king and queen of the Mountain), and the Winter track and field program to be held every fourth Sunday of each month commencing May 27. The track program will also be a little different and will offer all athletes a variety of events for all abilities and ages and will be ideal preparation for school events and those wishing to remain fit.
For The park runs incorporated into the program, athletes can register online beforehand for your chosen run and register under the name of Illawarra Blue Stars. Get your friends and families to take part also and form a group of IBS athletes and supporters and enjoy a “run with a difference”. April 14 is the next one conducted at Sandon Point with a start time of 8am and reporting at Bulli Beach. Full winter program will be circulated to all members and will also be on wwwillawarrabluestars.com.au web site. For more information phone 42628498
Awards for great season: Athletes and supporters are asked to keep Saturday evening, May 12, free for the Annual Awards and Presentation evening. This too will be circulated to all members. Don’t think you are not in line for an award, you don’t know unless you attend. Divisional awards and runners up will be awarded plus all special awards.
