That’s why it surprised no one that the South32’s Illawarra Metallurgical Coal employees have been selected as finalists for the 2018 NSW Women in Mining Awards.
Geotechnical engineer Christensen was nominated as a finalist in the Exceptional Young Woman in Mining category for her work to break down barriers that can prevent women from working on certain tasks in the mining industry.
She was paramount in leading the charge to get onsite parenting rooms installed to support breastfeeding mothers returning to work.
Christensen also was instrumental in the creation of welcome packs for new female employees. The packs contain items that make working underground more comfortable.
Working out of the company’s Appin operations, Christensen said she is proud to support other women in an industry that has typically been designed for a predominately male workforce.
Industries which aspire to greater female participation need to ensure their workplaces provide the essentials, such as fit-for-purpose facilities and work gear.

“Design has the unique ability to make people feel acknowledged and respected. As an industry we have the opportunity to attract and retain more females by ensuring the basic functionality of our workplaces and facilities make all employees feel valued,” she said.
“Industries which aspire to greater female participation need to ensure their workplaces provide the essentials, such as fit-for-purpose facilities and work gear.
“I recommend they test their designs with their current female workforce to verify it truly suits their needs.”
Electrical operator Gregory was nominated for the Outstanding Tradeswoman/Operator/Technician category for her efforts to break down traditional stereotypes that may challenge women on site.
”I strongly believe people should be recognised in the mining industry for the quality of work they perform, no matter their gender, and every day I work to demonstrate my capabilities and strengths and encourage respect for the work I do,” Gregory said.
The NSW Women in Mining Awards will be held in Sydney on Thursday, March 15.
Winners on the night will go on to represent New South Wales at the Women in Resources National Awards.
