But even though the weather has rained on the parade so to speak in six of the past seven events, the annual MS Mega Swim has raised more than $275,000 over the past seven years to fund special Go for Gold scholarships for multiple sclerosis sufferers.
Figtree Lions Club hope to raise $40,000 from the eighth annual swim being held at the University of Wollongong’s UniActive pool on March 17-18.
Four Olympians, including Wollongong’s David and Emma McKeon are urging swimmers to take the plunge and enter a team this year.
The McKeon siblings, as well as fellow Olympians Dan Smith and Grant Irvine, were in Wollongong recently training at the UniActive pool in preparation for Brisbane’s Commonwealth Games later this year.
Figtree Lions Club spokesman Bill Wright said nine teams had nominated so far for the event but there was room for more teams.
“The event runs for 24 hours and a swimmer from each team must be in the water during this period. The weather conditions do not seem to slow down these dedicated swimmers as we have had rain during the event for six of the seven years,” he said.
Mr Wright added the Go for Gold scholarships were awarded for employment, education, sport, art or any other worthwhile supporting need.
