Nowadays the issue is especially relevant for schools.
That’s why the mandatory Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE) curriculum from Kindergarten to Year 10 provides opportunities for students to develop the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to keep themselves and others safe online.
Schools also support initiatives such as the Safer Internet Day (#SID2018).
The annual worldwide event on Tuesday, February 6 is driven in Australia by the office of the esafety commission to encourage a safe use of the internet.
This year’s theme is ‘Create, connect and share respect: A better internet starts with you’.
The Office of the eSafety Commissioner has a variety of lesson plans and resources available on their website that cover the knowledge, understanding and skills of critical thinking, empathy, respect, resilience and responsibility that are needed to be safe on the internet.
The website also provides information to share with parents and the school community to promote safe attitudes and behaviours.
Through the study of PDHPE, students in K-6, have the opportunity to explore:
- how safe practices promote personal wellbeing
- safe practices that are appropriate to a range of situations and environments
- the decision making process and the effects of their actions on others
- rights and responsibilities for themselves and others
- risk taking and evaluating decisions
- modeling fair and safe behavior
- people who they can turn to for help
In Years 7-10 PDHPE, students have the opportunity to explore:
- forms of bullying and harassment
- protective strategies to effectively manage their own and others personal safety
- safe and supportive environments
- positive and negative risk-taking
- skills to access health information, products and services
- accessing accurate information
- ground rules and boundaries in relationships
- planning for safety or seeking help.
