A warm up event is planned for January 23 at 10.30am before the actual walk takes place at 10am on January 26 at Wollongong Harbour.
Australia Day Aquathon event organiser Rob Battocchio said the walk was always “a unique, fun and family friendly event for all ages and registrations are being taken now”.
The Warrigal Community Walk is a leisurely 4 kilometre stroll Mr Battocchio describes as “a scenic coastal traffic free experience” that supports a great local Illawarra charity.
“This year Warrigal and Aquathon are thrilled to announce a new charity partnership with Illawarra’s Flagstaff Group, the largest local support for those with disabilities,” Mr Battocchio said.
“20 per cent of all entry fees, along with any participant donations and fund raising will go to this amazing charity.”
“Kicking off at 10am from Belmore Basin (Wollongong Harbour) the Warrigal Australia Day Walk starts with a short lap around the historic Wollongong Boat Harbour, then over Cliff Road, passing North Wollongong Beach onto the Stuart Park turn point and then the return to the Harbour.”
Registrations are open from 8.30am to 9.45am on January 26.
Flagstaff Group chief executive Roy Rogers said it was great to be involved in the Warrigal hosted event this year because the 2018 Australia Day Community Walk had a strong focus on inclusion, accessibility and community engagement.
“We’re proud to be working with Warrigal to involve as many members of the community as possible and making the walk accessible for all ages and abilities,” Mr Rogers said.
Warrigal chose the Illawarra based disability enterprise as its charity partner for the walk because it saw the event for people of all ages and abilities as a perfect partnership.
Both Warrigal and Flagstaff contribute to creating an inclusive community.
Warrigal is a community owned organisation focused on creating inspiring communities for older people.
Flagstaff is a not-for-profit social enterprise supporting people with a disability to unlock their potential and achieve their goals. It offers opportunities through employment and skills pathways, independence pathways and social pathways.
Flagstaff Group staff and Life Choices participants joined Warrigal staff and residents at the new Warrigal Shell Cove site last Friday for a light walk and stretch session to prepare for the main event on January 26.
A second pre-event will be held next Tuesday at Wollongong Harbour.
It will be attended by a group of Flagstaff students and employees, Warrigal residents, and a representative from local wheelchair basketball team the Wollongong Roller Hawks.
Many community groups, organisations, families and individuals will then join them for the actual walk and community celebration on January 26.
Australia Day activities in Wollongong run until 10pm. The foreshore will come alive all day with a fair, activities, stalls and children rides before concluding in a climax with a fireworks show over the harbour.
