The centre will be operating out of the North Wollongong site while the Community Hall in Coniston undergoes renovations and will showcase to a new audience how their members are embracing a path to fitness and wellbeing through a variety of classes designed especially for women over the age of 45.
Fitness is something we lose gradually and the process is hard to recognise, but one thing that is recognisable is the gradual loss of ambition to do something about it.
After much research into the health and wellbeing of older women, the Older Women’s Network has developed a model of wellness for women over the age of 45 that is achievable, affordable and embracing.
In 2009 it introduced this model to the Illawarra when it opened the Illawarra OWN Wellness Centre in the Coniston Community Hall.
On Monday and Tuesday of each week during school terms, classes are held in a variety of disciplines that were designed to combat the loss of balance, co-ordination, concentration, and other skills which as we age, take a huge toll on our ability to remain alert and active into our older years.
These will commence on February 5, at the PCYC and will be showcased at the open day between 9.30am and 1pm on January 29.
Illawarra Wellness Centre was opened in September 2009 and began with classes in Tai Chi, Gentle Exercise and Drumming. Within a year two extra classes were added and the program of activities now includes Tai Chi, Extra Gentle Exercise, Fitness For Seniors, Drumming, Folk Dancing, Thai Yoga and Ukulele.
Culturally we have a great amount of diversity amongst our members, most of whom are Aussies with lots of women from the UK and others from Turkey, Malaysia, Scotland, the Netherlands, Indonesia, China, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Peru, Argentina, Czech Republic, Malta, USA, Macedonia, Poland and Estonia.
The group also covers a wide span of ages from 45 to 90, and for this reason, our exercise classes also cover a range of abilities.
