Wollongong Amnesty volunteers are calling on all community members to participate in Write for Rights on December 9.
Amnesty International’s annual global letter writing campaign creates positive change for people who are experiencing human rights abuses.
‘’We are inviting everyone to come along, have a coffee, pick up a pen, and help free a prisoner of conscience or support someone under attack for trying to protect their rights,’’ Amnesty Wollongong spokesperson Jane Cipants said.
‘’Amnesty International can shine a light on terrible things being done to ordinary people, if we all pitch in.
‘’All you need to do is come to Bulli Beach Café between 9.30 and 11am on Saturday, December 9, and sign a petition or write your own personal message of support.
‘’We will mail them off together with thousands more across the country, and millions around the globe. It’s inspiring to be a part of it.’’
The Wollongong group has supported Write for Rights for many years.
In 2016 Amnesty International volunteers around the world, including those in the Illawarra, took over four million actions to defend the human rights of individuals. This saw a number of prisoners successfully released.
