Governor of NSW, His Excellency General David Hurley AC, DSC, presented the students with their awards at Government House on June 7.
Award coordinator Nathan Alterator said Shellharbour Anglican College has been running the Award for more than nine years.
‘’The Award provides an invaluable opportunity for our students to grow in confidence, connect with the community and develop valuable life skills,’’ he said.
‘’Through the Award, our students become better citizens engaged with their communities and their learning.’’
The Gold Award requires a high level of commitment and dedication by participants over a 12-18 month period and consists of five sections.
Students must regularly undertake a skill, community volunteering, physical recreation as well as team-based adventurous journeys.
An extra section is required for the Gold Award whereby participants must spend four nights away from home on a shared project with people they do not know.
Gold Award recipient Boyd Maclean from Jamberoo, said he gained valuable leadership skills and travelled to ‘’lots of amazing places’’.
‘’I cherished every moment in the program and would do it all over again,’’ Boyd said.
Luke Debrot from Albion Park said the program was the most ‘’holistic, selfless and rewarding program someone can ever hope to partake in’’.
