Over the past six years Illawarra Intrepid Landcare has inspired a number of youth-led initiatives working to get young people involved in environmental projects around the country.
This initiative has been so successful, founder Megan Rowlatt is now launching the concept at a national level.
Fittingly, Intrepid Landcare will be launched right here in the Illawarra on Sunday, December 20.
Illawarra Intrepid Illawarra has teamed up with Beardson and Landcare Australia to host the community barefoot bowls event at Towradgi Park Bowls and Recreation Park.
Bowls, live music, prizes for best beards and braids (for the ladies) will feature at the event from noon to 4pm. There will also be craft beer and sustainable merchandise packs up for grabs.
Performing artist studio Chaplin Arts will co-ordinate the entertainment, with local artists providing chilled out seaside acoustic tunes while people bowl into the afternoon.
“We are inviting everyone to come and celebrate with us on the day,’’ Ms Rowlatt said. “We want to come together and thank the many individuals who are working on the ground in the Illawarra, particularly young people.
“This is an exciting initiative and I am so proud of the other environment groups who are collaborating with us on this event and supporting us going national.’’
Ms Rowlatt is also being credited with leading the development of a Landcare Australia resource kit aimed at attracting more young people committed to protecting the country’s crucial land and water assets into the future.
Meantime, Clean Coast Collective, Beach Clean Ups Illawarra, Surfrider Foundation, Conservation Volunteers Australia, Landcare Illawarra and Fish Thinkers Research group are also participating in the bowls day.
The day will kick off with a beach clean-up at Towradgi Beach from 9am. Community members are invited to help remove debris from this popular Illawarra beach.
Funds raised will go to Illawarra Intrepid Landcare and UOW Intrepid Landcare, who are delivering local projects encouraging young people to volunteer with local Landcare and Bushcare groups.
