The Bureau of Meteorology predicts 8 -15 mm of rain will fall around Wollongong, most likely in the morning.
There is also a 60 per cent chance of rain on Thursday night, according to the weather bureau.
The temperature will reach a top of 21 degrees on Friday before cooling down on Saturday when a maximum of 19 degrees is forecast.
Saturday and Sunday is expected to be dry and cloudy with only a 5 per cent chance of rain.
The weather will warm up progressively throughout next week, reaching a maximum of 28 on Wednesday.
Weatherzone meteorologist Jacobus Cronje said the downpour, which will also hit Sydney, would be a welcome relief.
"It won't just be a few droplets," he said. "We can expect showers and possibly storms. Finally Sydney will have some decent rain."
"Sydney has just experienced the driest September on record and so far October has been the driest on record but hopefully that will change tomorrow."
Residents will have to re-familiarise themselves with umbrellas, raincoats and windscreen wipers but only briefly as the wet weather is expected to clear.
