Once again Illawarra Blue Stars masters athletes have opened the season well and although the Australian Masters Winter Throws Championships were held last weekend, they are a great title event to lead into summer.

Our ladies were magnificent and two of the most determined athletes to take to the field shone out again.
Mary Thomas dominated her Championship with wins in the shot, discus, hammer, javelin weight throw, weight for distance (with new meet record) 1st in the throws penthalon and 1st in the heavy weight (with state record) to take out the overall Championship for her age bracket.
June Lowe, another of the club’s determined and very capable athletes, took out 1st in the shot, 1st hammer, 1st javelin, 1st weight throw, 1st in throws pentathlon and 2nd in the discus to take out her Australian title for her age bracket.
What a great long weekend these ladies had.
A very hectic program, conducted over 2.5 days, athletes travelled from all over Australia to contest this event conducted on our own Kerryn McCann Athletic Centre, a tribute to the Masters Association bringing this Aussie Championship to our area.
Illawarra Blue Stars athletes have opened the summer season on a high with some very good performances at the Treloar Shield on Saturday.
The opening meet attracted athletes from all clubs, and looks to be a promising series.
Emma Matthews again was prominent in the 100 and 400 metres whilst Charlotte Smith also took to both track and field and performed well against different competition.
The previous Saturday saw members of the club use the Pre All Schools Meet as a warm-up for the coming NSW All Schools that begin this Thursday.
Many of the club’s members travelled to Sydney for that extra competition to tune up for the largest school carnival to be held in the state.
The club expects a full contingent of athletes to face up to some of the best junior athletes in Australia.
Some are making their debut in these titles under Illawarra Blue Stars and we wish them all well, whilst others have been successful in previous meets.
No rest during school holidays for these athletes, as the championships are expected to be highly competitive in all ages , all events.
New faces are appearing at club level each week and now into the second week of the club’s summer program, it is exciting to see.
Athletes are reminded to seek out coaches if they haven’t a coach at this stage.
Parents are encouraged to become officials and helpers and they too can offer their services and if they desire, can become qualified officials.
All hands are most welcomed and even if you are not real familiar with the sport, there will be qualified officials to guide and help you along.
Athletes are reminded to have their “expression of interest “ in for state relays coming up very quickly, the first weekend of November, so teams can be organised and selected.
Athletes too are reminded they must have club uniforms in the new style and can be ordered each Sunday at club competition.
