Negotiations have stalled once again after the RLPA decided against taking an in-principle agreement to the players following a meeting at NRL headquarters on Friday afternoon.

The RLPA is keen to seek further clarity around financial and non financial matters, including integrity, commercial arrangements, wellbeing and education and insurance.

Players stand to benefit from a pool of $1billion over the next five years as part of the revenue share model the NRL proposed to the RLPA on Friday.

With all 16 clubs unanimously agreeing to a $9.4 million salary cap on Thursday, NRL chief executive Todd Greenberg and chief operating officer Nick Weeks met with RLPA boss Ian Prendergast and general counsel Tim Lythe at League Central on Friday afternoon.

Greenberg and Weeks presented the NRL's proposal to the RLPA in the hope of having the collective bargaining agreement signed off by the players at a meeting in Sydney on Monday. However that it unlikely.

"Significant progress has been made during the Collective Bargaining Agreement negotiations between the Rugby League Players Association and the National Rugby League in recent weeks, particularly since NRL CEO, Todd Greenberg, has been involved," the RLPA said in a statement on Friday night.

"Alignment has been achieved on a number of matters. However, the parties remain apart on many key financial and non-financial aspects of the agreement. The RLPA intend to continue negotiations with the NRL to address these outstanding matters and believe an agreement can be reached in coming weeks if time continues to be committed to the negotiation process. The RLPA will seek direction from our board over the weekend and update players at a mass meeting on Monday."

Under the proposal, the average NRL player would stand to earn $330,000 a season.

The AFL, which has a larger player pool to cater for than the NRL, struck a deal that would see players pocket close to $1.84 billion over the next six years.

The NRL last year secured a broadcast rights deal worth $2 billion for five years, and will be giving half of that money to the players if they vote to accept the proposal for 2018 to 2022 when they gather in Sydney on Monday afternoon.

It's understood close to 300 NSW-based players will gather to discuss the proposal, with non Sydney based players to be able to participate via a video conference.

The RLPA will hold meetings with board members over the weekend, but won't sign off on the proposal.

"It is unfortunate that the RLPA will not be in a position to take an in-principle agreement to its Members for consideration during that meeting, but we are committed to continue working towards reaching an agreement over the coming weeks," Prendergast said.

The NRL, which was originally desperate to avoid a revenue share model, is ready to hand the players 29.5 per cent of guaranteed projected revenue and a 25 per cent share of the game's upside should revenue exceed forecasts.

If the RLPA is not satisfied with the offer they could press ahead with industrial action including boycotting events during the finals series including the Dally M awards.

The AFL's deal saw the average player (not including rookies) rise from $309,000 to $371,000, while the salary cap increased from $10.37 million to $12.45 million.
