Having been part of the Australian touring party that relinquished the Border-Gavaskar trophy in India earlier this year, Queensland leg-spinner Swepson was a late addition to the squad for the two-Test Bangladesh series and is in Darwin for the pre-tour camp which features a three-day intra-squad match beginning on Monday.

A favourite of Australian leg-spinning great Shane Warne, Swepson, 23, has taken 41 first-class wickets at a shade under 33 from his 14 matches, and is hopeful of earning a baggy green against the much-improved Tigers.

However, Swepson acknowledged that the fact he was the last of the three spinners selected to tour means he will likely need to bide his time as Lyon, the most successful off-spinner in Australian Test history, and left-armer Agar get the first bite at the cherry, with all-rounder Glenn Maxwell another option. "I'm hopeful as always," Swepson said on Saturday when asked about his Test prospects.

"[But] I was added late so you'd probably think that the other two blokes are ahead of me at the moment. But anything can happen. I've just got to prepare to play and if it doesn't happen then so be it, I'll just take the experience as it comes. I'm looking forward to that."

Even though he hadn't played in any of the Tests, Swepson said he had learnt plenty from touring India, including that not all subcontinental pitches behaved the same.

"I though the pitches were going to be very similar at all the places we went in India, but each place was different. I took out that you've got to be ready to adapt your bowling plans from place to place."

He also said that while he'd spent much of the pre-season working on his stock ball, he had recently started focusing more on variations.

"The last six months have been big for me. I've worked hard on my bowling and coming back this pre-season I was really happy where my bowling was at. I think that was off the back of being on that India tour."

Cricket Australia's high-performance chief Pat Howard spent time with the squad in Darwin last week as Australia's players and management look to move on from the divisive and at times bitter Memorandum of Understanding negotiations that had put the Bangladesh tour in doubt but concluded earlier this month with a new agreement.

Howard was a part of CA's negotiation team, and while several players are understood to have had issues with his approach during the pay impasse, Swepson said there had been no issues since the players arrived in camp.

"I think everyone's just excited that we can get back out, have the ball in hand and get playing cricket. It's a great feeling to be all done and dusted," he said.

"I've had no bad experiences since being in camp. Everyone's just happy that it's been done. We're just really happy that we can get on with the cricket."

It has been more than 11 years since Australia played their second and most recent Test series in Bangladesh. While the Tigers are ranked only ninth in the ICC Test rankings, they have shown, especially at home, that they can be a handful, as highlighted by a 1-1 series draw with England last year.

As such, Swepson suggested that Australia couldn't afford to take the hosts lightly when the series begins in Mirpur on August 27. "They'e come a long way. Especially in their backyard they'll be very tough."
