Winter is seen by many of the track athletes as the “off season” but for the cross-country and school age athletes, it is one of their busiest. Whilst our top athletes are battling it out in London in the World titles, our own local athletes are making an impression in school carnivals.

Many of IBS athletes have had some brilliant performances on the track with many now heading to the Combined High and Primary Schools titles. We congratulate them all on performances that either were pb’s, entry into the state titles or just a good solid performance. Holding the form is the major challenge for a season that will commence on the track in September.
IBS cross-country has had some impressive results and great to see Geoff Hynoski placing second in The Big Ten conducted by ANSW. The club will conduct one more cross-country round on the Bulli course on Sunday 20th August, a course that offers the lot, hills, sand, grass and tough terrain.
A gold coin donation is all you need, so come on out to Bulli and have a great last cross-country prior to summer coming on. The final round of the club’s Winter Track and Field Series will be held on Sunday 27th August with events in sprints, middle distance jumps and throws. Any athlete can compete in this track and field meet and IBS encourages you to come along. Commencing at 10.30am IBS is also hoping that Wollongong City Little As will use the electronic timing again, and we thank them for their assistance.
We have all heard of the passing of one the greats of track and field, Betty Cuthbert. There are many local athletes and administrators who have great memories of this highly talented and respected athlete and person . Betty competed in a couple of events down here in the Gong on the Slacky Flat ground situated in Bulli, and it was here that she pushed our own local speedster Jill Nipperess to record a sub 11secs for the 100 yards and became the first local female athlete to do so. Betty also toured with former Olympian and Commonwealth Games champion Robyn Woodhouse-Sillitoe and also World Masters champion of today, Mary Thomas. Our condolences go to her family from all of the athletic fraternity.
Congratulations must go to three of the club’s masters athletes Diane O’Toole, Lynda Douglas and Gianna Mogentale. All three have just received their certificates for state records in the women’s 4 x 100 relays. Douglas and O’Toole teamed together in the women’s 55 years bracket, whilst Mogentale was in the highly impressive and record breaking 4 x 100 50 age bracket.
Our recent attendance at ANSW local Organising Committee for the coming Country titles for January 2018, showed that preparation is now underway. Delegates from all local clubs were in attendance and the delegation of duties to each club, were discussed with all delegates going back to their respective clubs for endorsement. Great to see Destination Wollongong on board and this too will give the Local Organising committee an idea of where and what they can offer to these very popular titles.
IBS will have an open afternoon on Sunday 17th September to open the summer track an field season. Commencing at 2pm events will also be conducted but athletes will have the chance to register and order uniforms for the coming summer track and field season. IBS will then commence the first round the following Sunday with point score competition, but athletes are reminded they can register at any time during summer.
