On Saturday, June 3, Geoff Hynoski and the Hogg family - Ashleigh, Jessica and Corey - ventured to the ANSW XCC Festival at the Sydney Equestrian Centre at Horsley Park to take part in the 12km and 6km events. All four athletes moved up distances but handled them well to finish in the middle order of competitors.
The ANSW Awards on Saturday, June 3, were a big night for our club. The announcement of the late Janet Munro as Official of the Year for Athletics NSW was a fitting reward for a lady who devoted so much time and effort to athletics in general.
Janet had a real feel for athletics and her determination to ensure athletes competed under the best possible conditions as to rules and regulations was one of her greatest assets.
Husband John was a happy and proud man as he accepted the award on behalf of his late wife. John wasn’t to be outdone, however, and along with club officials Neville Fenn, Jodie Sundstrom and of course Janet were acknowledged for officiating in 25 or more meets for Athletics NSW.
But the evening didn’t end there. Field games exponent Mary Thomas was awarded the Masters Thrower of the Year with ANSW, competing against male and female athletes. Another award bestowed on this lady who never gives up.
She will now travel to the Australian Masters Championships in Darwin this week where another award awaits her as she has also been nominated for Australian Masters Thrower of the Year (Female division).
To finish her summer season she now just needs to win or be placed in her events in the National titles.
Blue Stars held their Annual General Meeting last week with Geoff Hynoski returning as President and along with Vice-President Sue Sundstrom, Secretary Valmai Loomes and Treasurer Jodie Sundstrom make up the Executive.
They welcomed two new members to the Committee - Open athlete Rebecca Dos Santos and Masters Athlete & official Jaime Deegan who will make up the Committee with long serving members Gianna Mogentale, Ian Smith and Lynda Douglass.
Winter track and field, June 25:
Blue Stars are urging all members, future members and any other ANSW athletes to come down to the Kerryn McCann Athletic Centre on Sunday, June 25, for the first of our Winter Track and Field meets. Starting at 10:30am, athletes of all ages and abilities are encouraged to not only test out the newly resurfaced track but to also test themselves in events ranging from sprints to middle distance, walks, throws and jumps.
Masters off to Darwin:
IBS would like to wish all Masters athletes the very best of luck as they venture to Darwin for the Australian Masters Championship. The titles have been put back from April due to the higher temperatures in Darwin and it is promising to be one of the best titles for some time. Blue Stars will be strongly represented by Mick Daly, John Lamb, Mary Thomas, Gianna Mogentale, June Lowe, Lynda Douglass, Rina Flynn, Diane O’Toole and Sarah Guevara all making the trip. The titles are on June 9-12. Good luck all!
