The first collection followed the February bushfires which devastated the communities of Uarbry and Kains Flat in central west NSW.
Thirty-five homes, 131 outbuildings and over 5000 animals were lost.
In addition nearly 6000 kilometres of fencing was destroyed.
Mudgee’s two Rotary clubs established a charitable fund to receive and disperse donations.
We collected a total of $3000 which was sent to that relief fund and boosted the total received to just over $100,000.
Of that amount, $80,000 has been dispersed, most to BlazeAid for fencing materials purchased from local businesses.
Smaller amounts have assisted individuals.
BlazeAid volunteers have completed road fencing and are now working on perimeter fencing of affected properties.
The second disaster was flooding on the NSW North Coast, especially in Lismore, at the end of March.
Corrimal Rotarians collected $5800 in donations which has been sent to the Rotary Club of Lismore.
Significant amounts of money have already been dispersed and used for purposes including replacement of musical instruments and sporting equipment, soil for a community garden, and a container and equipment for the Men’s Shed.
There are many remaining needs that the money collected here will go towards.
They include replacement of an agricultural shed at Richmond River High School.
Only the materials are needed as the students themselves will build the shed.
Other needs include replacement of a preschool’s garden and infrastructure, and equipment for a disability service and support organisation.
Corrimal Rotary Club would like to acknowledge the generosity of shoppers at Stockland Corrimal, and of all the patrons at Balgownie Hotel, North Gong Hotel, Corrimal RSL, Towradgi Bowling Club and Towradgi Beach Hotel.
We’d also like to acknowledge the management of these venues for allowing us to collect donations from their customers.
Thank you all!
