Mums, dads, carers and kids across the Illawarra your schedule is about to fill up with fun activities like making kites, going on bushwalks, riding trains and telling stories around the campfire, because it’s time for KidsFest!
KidsFest Shellharbour is the biggest community run FREE week-long festival for children, their families and carers in NSW and it will take place from May 14-20.
The 2017 festival theme is ‘Celebrating 10 years - Children, Community, Country’.
“We invite families and carers to celebrate Shellharbour's stunning natural locations, connect with the community and come together to play with hundreds of free activities at 50 festival events across Shellharbour City,” artistic director, Ann Lehmann said.
“This community celebration brings a sense of place and a sense of belonging.
“KidsFest is about building a sense of connection and passing on traditions that were a magical part of our own childhoods. Activities like making and cooking damper on sticks over the fire, making and flying a kite, going spotlighting, watching cows getting milked and feeding the baby calves - these activities become the memories of a happy childhood.

“During KidsFest we host activities in stunning locations which families can continue to access throughout the year. Riding steam trains, family bushwalks, spotlighting with Council Rangers, the Emergency Services Expo, PCYC events, Cardboard Creations at Crew Park, the Communities for Children Picnic at Blackbutt and the finale at Killalea State Park are the perfect locations to bring the family and spend some quality time together.
“For me, the heart of KidsFest is about giving kids the opportunity to connect with Aboriginal culture at Killalea State Park, a place of cultural significance where Aboriginal people would have lived and celebrated for thousands of years.
“A smoking ceremony takes place at twilight, young Aboriginal dancers with ocher body paint dance accompanied by didgeridoo against a backdrop of a roaring fire, cooking damper on sticks and telling stories round the campfire.
“We invite you to join this unforgettable experience at the KidsFest Finale at the Killalea Campground from 4pm on Saturday May 20.”
KidsFest Shellharbour is about supporting children and families in a vibrant and friendly way and is funded through sponsorship from the local community. The initiative partners local businesses with community organisations across Shellharbour City to encourage social inclusion and an enhanced sense of belonging for children 0-12 years, their families and carers.
