The show is set in 1788, and the British Government has sent a fleet to colonize Australia. Eleven ships, carrying almost 1500 officers, seamen and convicts, travelled for eight months before reaching NSW.
The vast majority of the 736 convicts had been convicted of a minor theft and had been sentenced to seven years’ transportation.
Our Country’s Good is a historical retelling of the convicts and officers as they prepare to put on a play entitled The Recruiting Officer.
The events are reportedly based on the letters and journals of several of the First Fleet officers.
Director Luke Berman has been busy preparing with his cast for the past 10 weeks.
“Watching Luke work with the cast has been a major asset to my theatrical repertoire,” debut production manager Graeme Downey said.
Our Country’s Good runs from May 19 to May 28.
