Williamson is determined to establish an A-League side in the capital when Football Federation Australia expand the competition and said an appetite exist in Canberra to make the venture financially viable.

The Central Coast Mariners played two games in Canberra this season at a loss after just 10,569 fans rolled through the gates and the club will require government funding to return.

Williamson believes a stand alone team in the capital would paint a different picture and said the support is there to fill a stadium in Bruce or Civic.

"Football is a huge sport in Canberra, we have the Raiders and the Brumbies, but football is number in participation, there is a significant interest for football here," Williamson said.

"Any time a big team comes to Canberra, like the Socceroos, there are 20,000 people at the stadium which indicates is there is an appetite for the game here."

ACT chief minister Andrew Barr said A-League content was a must if the government was to build a new $350 million rectangular stadium in Civic.

"Andrew Barr wants an A-league team to ensure a new stadium is viable and I would love to help him out with that, but I can't say that's my motivation because it's more about the football," Williamson said.

"It's going to a huge challenge but an A-League team in Canberra will work, it will be viable and it will have strong crowds. We're putting a realistic bid on the table that meets all the metrics the FFA are after."

Williamson said he began the bidding process after the FFA announced last year they were looking at expansion, but added later they won't for at least another two seasons.

"It's something I think needs to be done and when I found out nobody was doing anything that's when I decided I would," Williamson said.

"I got some people together and starting putting the wheels in motion, there's a dozen of us at the core but around 100 people who are willing to support us in various degrees.

"We're trying to put together a team that's going to represent all of Canberra, not just one part and we've been in contact with Capital Football and the FFA."

Capital Football boss Phil Brown threw his support behind the bid but ruled out any funding for the venture coming from their budget.

"Our core business is grass roots football and that's where our resources will be focused," Brown said.

"We're happy to hear that there's people in the community interested in the A-League and we're supportive of anyone who wants to further the opportunities for football in the region."

The Wollongong Wolves are also working on an expansion bid and are open to playing A-League games in Canberra, but Brown agreed with Williamson that a stand alone team would be better supported.

"I think the clear preference for everyone is a Canberra team but that doesn't rule out us working with whatever A-League club ends up being able to offer an opportunity for our players," Brown said.

An "A-league4Canberra" bid raised $5 million in capital several years ago, but the FFA overlooked Canberra to expand into Western Sydney.

FFA boss David Gallop is wary of expanding into city's with less than one million people after the Townsville-based North Queensland Fury survived just two seasons before falling into financial ruin.

"Canberra has a population to support a team. Gallop wants one million but realistically there are no teams like that," Williamson said.

"In Canberra we're not aligned to any A-League club, we're new market and when you compare us to places like Tasmania and Geelong, Canberra is a much bigger area and football city."
