That’s right, Wollongong City Libraries’ Comic Gong 2017 roars back into the city for its fifth year with a colourful array of stalls, activities, Cosplay competitions and workshops.
Be sure to pencil Saturday, May 13 into your calendar.
Comic Gong will take over Wollongong Town Hall, Wollongong City Library, Arts Precinct and Wollongong Art Gallery.
New to Comic Gong this year will be the first floor of the library being transformed into a gaming room with board games, RPGs (role-playing games) and virtual reality.
Wollongong City Lord Mayor Cr Gordon Bradbery (a fervent reader of Batman) said Comic Gong represents a collective celebration of pop culture and the creativity of comics, graphic novels, anime, Manga and Cosplay.
“Comic Gong has grown from a half-day event in Corrimal District Library into a bright and cheery celebration that ignites the love of comics and associated cultures in all members of the family,” he said.
“The Cosplay competitions attract people from all ages and all areas.
“It’s a great way to share your enthusiasm and your knowledge.”
Comic Gong will include 74 stall-holders and artists in the Town Hall, with many travelling from throughout NSW and interstate to exhibit on the day.
There will also be three workshops – Creating Characters with Karen Beilharz, suitable for 17-plus years; Introduction to Cartooning with Tinman Johnson, five to 12 years; and Composing the Comic Page with Louie Joyce, for 13-16 years.
There will also be a Draw Off between Matt Lin, a Sydney-based artist and Wollongong’s own Marcelo Baez.
The popular Cosplay competitions (for those aged 0-12 years, 13-17 years, 18-plus years, and Group) return, as does the Cosplay parade.
There will be 15 activities including Early Start from the University of Wollongong – kids’ craft and activities in the library; and Gaming in the Library – Pinballs, 3D printing, board games, VR, RPGs and more. Also on the agenda is face-painting, badge-making, Circus Workshop, Batman and the Batmobile and more.
