More than 4000 children of all ages, families, friends, supporters and volunteers joined together to enjoy the festivities with just perfect weather to bring people out to have fun.
The highlight of the day was the Easter Egg Hunt which ran every 15 minutes to make sure the huge number of children and their families were able to get their share of the eggs. Next highlight of the day were the “old time” games many of us remember - sack races, egg and spoon, three-legged and wheelbarrow races plus a novelty balloon race.
Kids were also given the option to draw their favourite Easter image with chalk on the footpath near the children’s playground.
“We were thrilled with the fantastic turn out for our inaugural Easter Family Fun Day and a great day was had by all,” acting curator of the garden James Beattie said.
“More than 40,000 Easter eggs were handed out to garden visitors or found in our Easter Egg hunts!
“It was a great team effort between our staff, volunteers and sponsors and we are looking forward to all working together again next year to deliver a bigger event in 2018.”
Rotary’s barbecue sold out on several occasions and the Letts Do Coffee van also finished the day with supplies exhausted.
President of the Rotary Club of Wollongong, Leigh Robinson, shared the comments of the Rotary team.
“We are delighted that so many joined us to be part of the fun, to be involved in the easter egg hunt, the ‘old time’ games, topped off by the traditional Rotary’s sausage sizzle.” he said.
The Botanic Garden Tour Buggy, operated by the Friends of the Garden, ran non-stop from 10am-2pm offering visitors a wonderful glimpse of the beauty and colour within the Garden.
The event was generously sponsored by The Friends of the Garden, Corrimal Imaging Centre, Sage Hotel Wollongong, BlueScope Community Partners, and PeopleCare with media sponsors i98FM and the Illawarra Mercury.
